The National Indigenous Economic Development Board has long asserted that Indigenous peoples’ involvement in resource opportunities – as participants, partners, and proponents – is critical to unlocking the economic wealth of the resource sector in an environmentally responsible way for the benefit of all Canadians, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike.
In January 2015, the Board released its report on Enhancing Aboriginal Financial Readiness for Major Resource Development Opportunities outlining the type of institutional arrangements and capacity that may be required to ensure that Indigenous communities are best positioned to participate in the financial benefits of major resource opportunities. The Board made recommendations in two key areas: (1) Institutional arrangements supporting community financial management; and, (2) Strengthened capacity to support sound financial management.
